Lee Pipped to Post in Dubai

Lee WestwoodEngland's Lee Westwood finished in 2nd place to Spain's Miguel Angel Jimenez in the Omega Dubai Desert Classic at The Emirates Golf Club in Dubai after a dramatic three hole play-off.

 

In regulation play Lee made a birdie four from the right hand side of the green at the last hole to draw level with Jimenez on eleven under par. The play-off began on the treacherous 18th hole where at the first and second times of asking both players made pars. They then proceeded to the par four 9th hole where the pair missed the green with their second shots and then chipped to the green - it was Lee to play first and his putt just drifted off line and he had to settle for a bogey five. Jimenez then holed his putt for a par four to take the title.

 

"The writing was on the wall. Miguel plugs in the front, 99 times out of a 100 that goes back in the water," said Westwood following his 13th top ten finish in 16 events. "And he's also one of the best bunker players on tour. He still plays one of his poor bunker shots, but holes out to stay in it. That's one of those things, play-offs can be like that."
